Introduction:
Patient forums can be put to many uses within the practice. Essentially it allows patients to ask questions in a secure
and confidential online environment.
How it Works:
Using a set of administration tools, the practice can view new questions, check the patient details, edit the original
question and reply to it. The reply is then shown on the forum and the patient can view it using a special Message ID. A
forum search facility allows other patients to search on a subject to see if information has already been posted. This
means that once a question has been answered for a particular individual, that information may also help others.
Confidentiality:
The forum is secure and confidential and at no time are the patient details shown. To identify a patient, only the Patient
Number, first three letters of the surname and date of birth are requested. This makes it difficult for a third party to identify
the person. Also all data entry is encrypted, and as a final measure, as soon as a question is replied too, the patient details
are deleted from the question.
Teen-Scene:
A number of General Practices have put the forum to excellent use by helping teenagers. The forum allows a young
adult with a query for a Doctor or Nurse to ask a question and view their reply on-line. The forum is completely confidential
and questions can be on anything health related.
